AODA Counselor

 

Horizon High School(HHS) is a recovery high school in Madison, WI.  It provides a high school education in a supportive, therapeutic, and sober environment for up to 15 students who have completed a substance abuse treatment program and are committed to maintaining their sobriety.  The school offers a standard high school curriculum, as well as individual and group counseling, chemical dependency education, relapse prevention and support, and UA testing.  Horizon High School is seeking an experienced AODA counselor to provide individual and group counseling and support to students, as well as educational support to the teacher and Director. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The AODA Counselor will work under the supervision of the Director and will be primarily responsible for the following:

 

  • Designing individual and group therapy goals and curriculum
  • Providing one hour of group therapy daily
  • Providing individual assistance and therapy to students as needed
  • Helping students develop and work a relapse prevention plan
  • Assisting students in reaching their treatment and behavioral goals
  • Coordinating and cooperating with the students’ personal therapists
  • Managing daily student issues or crises

 

As HHS is a small school and requires employees to play multiple roles in order to provide the best educational opportunity for the students, the Counselor will also be expected to do the following:

 

  • Assist the Director and/or teacher as needed with educational curriculum
  • Help facilitate the execution of the Life Skills class

 

Background and Skills Required:

 

  • Masters Degree in counseling, therapy or social work
  • LPC, LMFT, or LCSW
  • Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC)
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and appropriate insurance
  • Passion for working with adolescents
  • Minimum of three years experience in AODA services
  • Minimum of three years experience working with adolescents
  • Minimum of two years experience teaching or as a guidance counselor
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines relating to mental health, alcohol, and drug counseling
  • Knowledge of local support services available to adolescents
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Demonstrated success in working with adolescents with dual diagnoses
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stress and crisis situations
  • Must be flexible, patient, and have a good sense of humor and “thick skin”
