MESSAGE FROM DCCRAA:

Dear Colleagues,
 
The DCCRAA  has become very concerned about the proliferation of liquor licenses in Dane County as Walgreen's now has a corporate policy to secure as many as possible nationally.  They have been very busy in Dane County.  We have worked in Oregon (WI) to stop the proliferation in that municipality.  The licensing entity did not grant a license to Walgreen's in that municipality.  To the Coalition, it is an issue of density and of further normalization of availability and consequent messages to children/youth.
 
Our research shows that:
 

In 1990, Walgreens ranked as the nation’s largest liquor outlet, with combined beverage sales of more than $800 million, according to Drug Store News. Those sales accounted for about 12 percent of the company’s revenues. 

 They gave up their licenses later in the 90's as they didn't then have the software to effectively manage the stock.  Now they say that they do.

The Madison Alcohol License Review Committee will be hold a hearing on  granting Walgreens' new liquor licenses on Wednesday,  June 16 at 5:30 PM  in Room 201 of the City County Building.  It will be important for Coalition members to come to the hearing and register their support for not granting these licenses.  The specific stores are listed below - those who are in the affected aldermanic districts may also want to express perspectives to their Alderperson.

Class A licenses allow the sale of beer, wine and hard liquor.  The Corporation is saying that they will only sell beer and wine.  But if granted the license, they may also sell hard liquor even if they are not planning to do so at this time.

This is a chance for the Coalition to have an effect on an important local issue.
